Hidden meaning

Anna Bellerive

This class gave me a greater appreciation of how much thought poets put into their poems. I had always understood that each word choice had a specific purpose and meaning, but I never thought that something as simple as the amount of words in a line or the shape the words make on the page, could be an attempt by the poet to further expand on his/her idea. I never would have imagined before this class, that “l(a” by E. E. Cummings could have so much meaning behind its seemingly random assortment of letters. I have a love of poetry, and I feel this class has allowed me to see poems in an entirely new light, and discover previously hidden secrets among their verses.
