Shane’s inner turmoil becomes apparent as the book
progresses. One can see the regrets he has about who he once was, and the
careful steps he goes through to keep that old self buried within him. Yet despite
the implications that he was once dangerous, he strives for a clean slate, and
his true goodness shines through in his actions toward the Starrett family,
whether it be entertaining Bob or defending the good name of Joe Starrett.
